Have you ever woken up in a mood and known almost immediately that you're just off? Nothing particularly terrible has happened, but you're flat or irritated or anxious or overwhelmed. And then you start trying to think yourself out of it. "Come on, snap out of this. You've got nothing to be upset about."
Maybe you start analyzing why you're feeling the way you're feeling. Sometimes that helps. Sometimes it doesn't. But sometimes no matter how much you understand the feeling and why you're feeling it, you still feel it because you can't always think your way out of a vibration.
Hi, I'm Nicki Kuurman, and welcome to the Practical Mystic Podcast, where universal wisdom meets everyday life.
Today, I wanna talk to you about something I've been working on for a very long time, and that is our vibration, the frequency of your beingness, and particularly [00:01:00] how we change it. There's a lot of talk in spiritual circles about raising your vibration, being in the right vibration, attracting what you want, being energetically aligned.
But how does any of that actually happen in everyday life? I've talked about this analogy before, but I think it's worth coming back to.
The Radio Analogy
Imagine an old-fashioned radio. You turn the dial to tune into a radio station, and maybe you've landed on a jazz station, and you sit here thinking, "Oh, I don't really like this.
I really wanna hear rock." You have to keep adjusting the dial until you can find a station that's playing rock. If you don't touch the dial and you keep on listening to the jazz station and you go, "Where's the rock?" It's not going to come You're tuned into the wrong frequency. You actually have to change the radio station in order to hear something different because you cannot hear [00:02:00] two radio stations at the same time, and I think we do this to ourselves all the time.
We're sitting in fear, thinking about peace. We're sitting in resentment and thinking about love. We're sitting in scarcity and thinking about abundance. We're sitting in depletion, thinking about energy and feeling good. We're thinking about the state we'd like to be in while remaining completely tuned into the state that we are in.
And I'm not suggesting for a moment that difficult feelings and bad vibrations that we have to immediately get rid of. I don't believe that. I feel like we also have to sit with the bad stuff as well as the good stuff. Anger has incredible wisdom to it. It's important to tell us that something's off, and fear can be useful because sometimes we are not safe, and we need to be able to feel our spidey senses around us, or it's-- a fear is showing us [00:03:00] something that we truly wanna move away from.
Grief needs a lot of space. It isn't about spiritually bypassing what we feel like we're trying to make ourselves happy all the time. It's about recognizing when a state when you are stuck. When we're looping, when we're feeling it, when the same thoughts keep coming round and around, we are reinforcing our vibration.
Breaking the Loop
Think of a merry-go-round. At some point, if we want it to change, we have to jump off or at least stop it, right? Something has to interrupt the signal for us to stop looping around on that merry-go-round. You already know how to shift your state. A pause, a breath, interruption, changing scenery, and the interesting thing is we do this really naturally.
Think about when if you were standing at the stove and it's hot to touch, you [00:04:00] immediately pull away from it. You change it quickly. You're not gonna still go, "Oh, wow, that's hot. That's burning my hand," and keep looking at it. You're gonna change the situation immediately. Think about when you put on a love song.
Nothing in your external world has changed, but something inside you does. Sometimes there can be an uplift and sometimes there can be sadness. You walk outside and it's a different temperature to the one you're in, and you start to notice the things around you, the environment, the different noises, the trees, the sky, the earth.
Sensory Doorways
Nothing has changed really in your day except you moved from one environment to another and the vi- the vibration shifted. Something inside of you moved. You put your feet on the grass
Things change. Your energy grounds into the earth You have a shower, wash [00:05:00] away the day. You change the vibration. Feels good. You dive into the ocean. The shock of the cold water changes your, you immediately into your vibration. You intentionally light a candle and your mood shifts. You smell something that reminds you of somebody or somewhere that you've been.
You move your body, it shifts you. You take three deep breaths and you pause in the moment and receive the breath. It opens curiosity. It changes the vibration. It changes and interrupts the cycle that you were in When you consciously choose to sit quietly with a cup of tea to break up your day, these tiny little things shift, shift our energy, and you do it without thinking.
And what interests me is that not only are we thinking beings, we're [00:06:00] sensory beings, we're energetic beings, we're physical beings, and sometimes the fastest doorway back to ourselves isn't through thought. It isn't through trying to think our way out of a situation. It's an experience. It's pattern interruption I don't wanna feel like this.
What am I gonna do about it? And I think this is really interesting when I see people get stuck in things like, looking for a partner. They're so fixated on past hurt from previous partners that they're thinking more about what they don't want than what they do want. And you can't attract a new, loving, kind, open relationship when you're hurt and closed and bitter.
Those two vibrations don't match. If you want to attract someone who's positive and kind and thoughtful and funny and optimistic and free, [00:07:00] you have to be those things. You can't expect to be a vibrational match to something that you are not. In the last episode, I talked about the pause, the tiny moment where you notice what's happening and give yourself enough space to choose again.
But what happens when you've paused? You know what you'd like to choose. You know you'd like to choose happiness or peace or comfort or whatever the moment is, and you still can't get there by yourself. And that's where I think pattern interruption is really powerful, and it doesn't have to be enormous.
You don't necessarily need an hour-long meditation or completely transform what you're doing or how you're feeling to feel something different. One degree of difference can make a huge difference. One breath, one movement, one [00:08:00] stretch, one sensory cue. Light the candle. Put an oil in your diffuser. One tiny sensory thing, and the moment says, "I'm not going to keep fading into the state that I was in.
I'm actually going to feed and nurture the state that I want to be in. I'm gonna turn the dial down slightly or quietly turn the volume down a little on the old state, the old words, the old feelings, and I'm gonna turn up the dial on the things that I do want."
The Power of MYST
This is actually one of the reasons I've used energetic MYSTs in my work for years.
Long before MYST existed as a brand, I've been making personal sprays for clients. We might have done this in- beautifully in a session together in the past. Something has shifted, you've understood something differently, and then you feel [00:09:00] lighter or clearer or more connected to yourself. And then you leave, and you go home, back to the children, the partner, the job, the inbox, the person who's triggering you, traffic, life.
And I became really interested in where do they lose the new feeling and slip back into the old pattern? And so once we've reconnected to a new state of beingness, we need support to help hold us there. We need to remember, "Ah, yeah, that's what I want," because we quickly go back into that unco- unconscious pattern like flash.
So how do I help someone reconnect with what they've accessed once they're back in their ordinary life? Because transformation can't only exist in a therapy session. Because client transformation cannot exist in the healing room alone. It has to go home with you. And the MYST [00:10:00] became one of the tools that I used for that.
A physical sensory, energetic reminder to come back. Come back to yourself, come back to what you know, come back to the state that you want to create from. What MYST is actually doing is interrupting your old state of awareness. The MYSTs are calibrated to go from the negative state to the positive state.
They help reinforce where you wanna go instead of locking you into where you've been. The four elements that I always work with are scent, energy, symbol, and ritual. Scent accesses the amygdala in the brain, which houses all of our unspoken thoughts and emotions. And so when we smell something, it's directly connected from the olfactory senses of s- in our sense of smell to the amygdala, and the brain goes, "Oh, I remember that smell."
And without any words or [00:11:00] time, it reaches into those places and just awakens and gently remembers the experience. And flower essences work at the homeopathic level of keeping... If it's a vibrational match, then it helps calm and restore. It finds the imbalance and brings it in harmony again. Each MYST has its own light code that I have downloaded, and it represents the intention of that MYST.
And then there's the ritual of actually using the MYST to change your vibration in that moment. And this is the most important part, because you can have a pretty bottle sitting on your shelf, but you have to use it. And the reason that it's a ritual is because if you make something sacred and honor it, you place intention into it, you participate.
You [00:12:00] are co-creating the life that you want, the vibration that you want, the feelings that you want. You pause, you shake the bottle, you spray it, you breathe in, and you take a breath, and you start to notice your body. What the hell is going on for me? Where am I? You come back into alignment. You relax a little.
You keep breathing deeply. You start to notice your heart rate drop a little. Your feet feel heavy on the floor. And you start to notice the rats around you, your environment. And then when you spray it again, you set an intention. What am I moving toward? What vibration do I want? And as you keep breathing and you keep aligning and you allow the MYST to reach those places in your mind that are timeless and wordless, you're activating a connection to your soul self that says, "Ah, I know what you want.[00:13:00]
Come this way. Let's lift our vibration a little and get closer to what it is that you desire." MYST isn't doing the changing for you. It's helping you pause and remember who you are.
Ritual in Everyday Life
Sometimes we hear the word ritual, and we think of something elaborate or mystical or religious, but rituals are everywhere.
Your morning coffee is a ritual. Putting on your shoes before a walk is a ritual. Lighting a candle before you meditate, taking three breaths before you walk into a meeting. It's simply something that marks a transition from one state to another. I was there. Pause And now I'm choosing to meet this moment from here.
And perhaps that's what makes the ritual so useful. Working with vibration, it gives a moment where change can happen, not just in your mind, in your body, in your [00:14:00] senses, in your energy, in the present moment. You don't have to leap from fear to joy, and I think that matters. If you're frightened, depleted, angry, or grieving, I'm not asking you suddenly to leap into joy.
Sometimes that just isn't available. That frequency is just too high from where you are right now, and pretending can actually take us further away from ourselves and our truth. Faking positivity, spiritually bypassing, they can actually move us further away from our truth rather than closer. Maybe the shift is fear to safety, from overwhelm to one breath, to...
from resentment to a boundary, from depletion to rest, from feeling [00:15:00] scattered to being grounded, from feeling scarcity to possibility. It's just a small step. You just turn the dial a tiny little bit and choose again. What station can you reach from here? And then perhaps you turn it another degree again, and keep focused on: what am I tuning into?
Turning the Dial
Instead of asking, "What's wrong with me?" Or, "How do I make myself feel better?" Ask, "What am I tuned into right now?" Notice it without judgment. Just notice, "Ah, I'm tuned into sadness today." How does it feel in my body? Heavy, constricting. What thoughts are reinforcing it? I'm grieving, or I'm missing someone, or I'm feeling sad about something in particular.
What are you doing that's keeping you there in that moment? [00:16:00] What thoughts and stories are you looping in that moment that keep you in a negative state? And then quietly just ask yourself: What could interrupt this state?
Maybe it's three breaths. Maybe it's getting outside for a walk. Maybe it's music. That's really helpful. Movement, water, scent, stillness, a MYST spray, hand on your heart, meditation. Doesn't really matter what the tool is. The tool isn't the transformation. You are
The tool simply just gives you a moment to remember that you have some agency in what happens next. You can turn the dial, maybe only one degree today, but that one degree is all the difference And difference creates possibility. So perhaps changing your vibration isn't about forcing yourself into some permanently positive [00:17:00] state.
Perhaps it's about becoming more aware of what you're tuned into and remembering that you don't have to stay there. Pause, interrupt, breathe, come back to yourself. Be curious. What do I wanna tune into from here? Because once we realize that we can participate in us, in changing our state, we shift our state, another question starts to emerge.
What do I actually want? And what do I want more of? And what do I wanna feel more of? And what am I willing to receive? And perhaps most importantly, what am I available for? That's what we're going to explore next time. Thank you so much for joining me today on The Practical Mystic Podcast.
